    Internship and Graduate Programs at NREL

    Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) Program at NREL

    SULI is a DOE Office of Science internship program that can be found at multiple national laboratories across the country. This program places students in paid internships in Science and Engineering at any of several Department of Energy facilities, including NREL. Many of the participants in the program have decided on a career in science and engineering because of the nature of the experience. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs.

    This is a competitive program and students from all over the United States apply. The application opens on October 1 and will remain open until February 1.     Research Participant Program

    NREL is committed to interacting with educational institutions, industry, and other research organizations through our Research Participant Program. In return, participants are involved in exciting discoveries that go on here every day. Qualified university faculty, students, and professional scientists and engineers have the opportunity to participate in the Laboratory's research and development programs, initiate new areas of research, and establish a base for ongoing collaborations. You also can develop expertise in disciplines related to renewable energy research for application at your home institution or in your future career pursuits.

    Graduate Fellowship Program

    The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC) has established the DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE SCGF) program to support outstanding students to pursue graduate training in basic research in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences relevant to the Office of Science and to encourage the development of the next generation scientific and technical talent in the U.S.

    The University of Colorado offers a world-class community of faculty, staff, scientists, students and facilities. CU is a top ten US public research university, the only American Association of Universities institution in the Rocky Mountain Region, has four Nobel Laureates, many MacArthur, Fulbright and Packard Fellows, dozens of members of National Academies, and world-renowned joint research institutes with national labs/agencies such as NIST, NOAA, NCAR and NASA. The university is also home to numerous research centers and faculty research groups in chemistry, physics, biology, engineering, business, social sciences, journalism and law that are directly involved in work on renewable and sustainable energy issues.

    The Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI) was launched as a campus initiative in early 2006 to become an international force in solving the energy challenge through research, education and technology commercialization. Based on extensive faculty input, CU determined that a successful initiative must be highly interdisciplinary, integrating the University's extensive research in renewable and sustainable energy with its strengths in climate and environmental science, behavioral studies, policy analysis, and entrepreneurship. RASEI reflects this integration with a three-pronged approach that emphasized discovery, transformation, and entrepreneurship.

    In June 2009 the final objective of the initiative was achieved when the University of Colorado Regents formally approved the creation of the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute, and an agreement was signed with long time partner the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to make RASEI a joint institute.

    NREL is the U.S. Department of Energy's primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. NREL is operated for DOE by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC, comprised of the Midwest Research Institute, Battelle Memorial Institute, CU-Boulder, CSU, Colorado School of Mines, MIT and Stanford.  For more information visit http://www.nrel.gov.

    The Global Energy Challenge

    • Global energy demand is projected to double by mid-century.
    • At the same time, scientific evidence indicates that we must reduce human-generated global greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate climate change.
    • To handle just the projected increase in energy demand by 2050 will require the equivalent of a new energy economy equal to the size of the one that exists today.

    The Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI), an interdisciplinary joint research effort between the University of Colorado at Boulder and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), is advancing solutions for producing energy economically from low carbon sources, decreasing reliance on foreign oil, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and using energy more efficiently to meet the global energy challenge.

    RASEI's efforts focus on interdisciplinary energy research, training the next generation of energy professionals, and the development of market-ready leading-edge technologies.
